Ammeters
Procedure IB – Use Wiring Diagram
1. Disconnect ground cable from battery..
2. Cut off wire connected to battery terminal
of voltage regulator from battery clamp.
3. Connect wire, cut off battery clamp,
directly to one post of shunt.
4. Connect other post of shunt to battery with
another length of heavy duty automotive
wire.
5. Connect ground cable to battery. Switch
headlights on. Ammeter should indicate a
definite discharge. If ammeter indicates a
charge, DISCONNECT GROUND
CABLE ON BATTERY and reverse
ammeter leads only, on shunt.
Shunt to Gauge Wire Size
Depending upon the length of the wire from
the shunt to the ammeter, there is a need for the
following minimum wire size:
4 feet or under………………… #18 AWG
8 feet to 4 feet.………………... #16 AWG
16 feet to 8 feet……………….. #14 AWG
32 feet to 16 feet……………… #12 AWG
64 feet to 32 feet……………… #10 AWG
